Jagannath temple case: SC appoints Ranjit Kumar as Amicus Curiae

9/01/2019 at 12:21 PM

Bhubaneswar: The Supreme Court today appointed former Solicitor General of India Ranjit Kumar as the new Amicus Curiae to oversee reform measures at Jagannath temple in Puri.

The new appointment came after Gopal Subramanium, who was first appointed as the Amicus Curiae by the apex court, stepped down from his post on November 30 last year citing personal reasons.

The matter would be heard on February 5.

On June 6, the apex court had appointed Subramanium as an amicus curiae to assist it in the matter in which a plea was filed highlighting the difficulties faced by the devotees at Jagannath temple and their alleged harassment or exploitation by the servitors of the 12th century shrine.
