Khordha, Feb 4: Khordha District Administration today started inspection of boats ferrying passengers in Chilika lake in the wake of the boat tragedy on Sunday. A Special Task Force today started inspection of papers of both passenger and fishing boats. Sources said that around 7000 boats have been granted license for fishing by the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department while another 1500 boats are operating in the lake for ferrying tourist with licence from the Inland Water Transport (IWT) under transport department. Sources pointed out several factors such as unfit boats, boatmen without proper training, faulty engines and lack of awareness on life jackets have become a risky affair for tourists taking boat journey in the lake. A boat carrying around 20 passengers from Kalijai Temple in Chilika lake had capsized on Sunday evening. However, no one was killed in the incident.
