Infant allegedly sold for Rs 10000 in Odisha capital

Bhubaneswar, Feb 27: A 19 day old infant boy was allegedly sold by his parents for Rs 10000 in Bharatpur area under Khandagiri police limits today. The matter came to light after members of Child Welfare Committee (CWC) lodged a formal complaint with the police today. Police have detained the couple identified as Dilip Das and his wife Mini Das of Satyanagar slum in Bharatpur area. Police said that the couple admitted of selling their fifth child to a man in December in lieu of Rs 10000. Police also said that Dilip works as a daily wager and both of them decided to handover the new born out of their poverty. “The couple also claimed that they infant was handed over in presence of an Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) worker who has also been detained. We are trying to trace and rescue the child,” said a police official. Later in the evening, police rescued the child from Mancheswar. The child has been admitted to the Capital Hospital for a health check-up.
