The Institute of Dental Sciences (IDS), the faculty of dental sciences of SOA Deemed to be University, has been selected among the top 100 record holders for 2019 by India Book of Records for conducting the largest community based oral cancer screening programme.
A citation received by Prof. Neeta Mohanty, Dean of IDS, at a function held at Bhopal recently was endorsed by the Chief Editors of Asia, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Nepal and Bangladesh Book of Records.
The citation said Prof. Mohanty had recorded an incredible achievement of conducting the largest community based oral cancer screening.
The IDS initiative had led to the screening of 1342 persons on a single day on February 3, 2018. The departments of Oral Medicine and Radiology, Oral Surgery, Oral Pathology and Public Health Dentistry of IDS and department of Community Medicine of the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital (SOA’s faculty of medical sciences) jointly conducted screening at eight centres in 16 villages around Jamujhari on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar on the eve of World Cancer Day.
IDS has been conducting free camps regularly in rural areas and also in its dental hospital providing free investigation and oral cancer treatment at minimum cost, Prof. Mohanty said.
