Bhubaneswar: The Hirakud Dam authorities will release the season’s first floodwater after a traditional puja anytime after 11 am today.

According to reports, a puja is now being conducted by the dam authorities at the Sluice Gate No. 7 before opening of the gate for release of floodwater. Only one gate will open as there the Mahanadi and its branch rivers have floodwaters due to continuous rains occurring for the last four days.

The Gate No 7 will open first on an experimental basis for which siren is blowing once in every five minutes and people are being warned not to go to the riverbed. The people have also been asked not to leave cattle to graze in the riverbed.

It may be noted that the water level of the dam has rose to about 617-foot level against its maximum level of 630- ft due to incessant rains in its upper catchment area. While about 1.40 lakh cusec water is entering into the reservoir, about 18,000 cusec water will be released, according to reports.

In 2018, floodwater had been released first from the dam on July 24 when the water level of the reservoir stood at 618 feet.
