Bhubaneswar, June 2: There is high probability of the southwest monsoon advancing into Odisha between June 9 and 11 as there is likelihood of a low pressure area developing over the northwest and adjoining Bay of Bengal around June 8, the Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) of SOA Deemed to be University here said on Tuesday. The formation of the low pressure area could help the southwest monsoon advance into eastern India, Dr. Sarat Chandra Sahu, and Director of CEC, said. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra coast was bracing up to face a cyclonic storm on Wednesday as the low pressure area developed over the southeast and adjoining east central Arabian Sea had developed into a deep depression and lay centered at 8.30 am on Tuesday, 450 km southwest of Mumbai, he said. The system could intensify gradually into a severe cyclonic storm and cross the Maharashtra coast in the forenoon of Wednesday, Dr. Sahu, said. Under its influence, thunderstorm accompanied by rain, was likely at most places in interior Odisha with heavy rainfall at one or two locations in the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nawarangpur, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Kandhamal and Balangir districts between Tuesday and Thursday. Rainfall might also occur at several places over coastal Odisha as well during the same period, he said. After crossing the Maharashtra coast, the system might move through central India and could result in rains between Wednesday and Friday, Dr. Sahu said.
