Costlier The Budget 2020 has proposed to increase excise duty on tobacco products and cigarettes across various lengths. Similarly, customs duty on footwear will be hiked to 35 percent from 25 percent while on furniture goods it will go up to 25 percent. Customs duty on specified goods used in refrigerators and AC to be hiked to 12.5 percent which was 10 percent earlier. Customs duty on auto, auto parts raised by up to 10 percent and health cess of 5 percent announced on import of medical equipment. However, customs duty on import of food processing items raised to 100 percent. Surprisingly, customs duty on wall fans increased from 7.5 percent to 20 percent and similarly customs duty on tableware and kitchenware doubled to 20 percent. Cheap Customs duty on import of newsprint, lightweight coated paper halved to 5 percent while anti-dumping duty on purified terephthalic acid (PTA) done away with. Customs duty exempted for raw sugar, agro-animal based products, tuna bait, skimmed milk. Customs duty has been exempted for select alcoholic beverages, soya fibre, soya protein withdrawn.
