Government school ‘Headmaster’ arrested for pangolin smuggling

Athagarh, July 1: The Athagarh Forest Department today arrested a government school headmaster, the mastermind of pangolin smuggling racket.

The arrested have been identified as Shyamsunder Behera of Badamba area, said Athagarh forest officer Sasmita Lenka.

According to reports, Behera, headmaster of Kayalapada Primary School in Tangi-Choudwar block, was involved in the smuggling.

A few days back, a special team from the Athagarh Forest Department has rescued a pangolin from a scooter on the Madhusudan Bridge here. Later, the forest officials had found its links stretched till Angul and Redhakhol.

Following which, five persons were arrested from Redhakhol and Angul. The investigating team got clues about the mastermind from the arrested persons and has been trying to nab Behera.

But, the team tapped Behera’s phone but the mastermind repeatedly changed the sim cards. Later, with the help of cyber police, the forest official managed to nab Behera from Dhenkanal.  

Lenka said, “We will interrogate him for further details about the pangolin smuggling racket and later will forward him court”.
