Bhubaneswar, Aug 21: Every year Odisha celebrates Ganesh Puja publicly by huge crowds at the pandals with faithful and deep-throated chants of sanskrit slokas by priests using loudspeakers. Not this year. All the permanent pandals are almost deserted, except for a few volunteers and Puja Committee members milling around in masks, where as the temporary pandals and decorations are missing this year. Veterans admit this year’s Ganesh Puja celebration is the most subdued celebrations that they had never witnessed before. As the state’s Covid count climbs steadily, the Ganesh Pandals, a defining feature of Talcher and Jatani towns are celebrating the festival in a low-key manner. The situation is very similar in twin city Cuttack-Bhubaneswar and other coastal districts having large number of Covid-19 infections. While the large pandals of Bhubaneswar usually deploy volunteers to manage crowd on the occasion, this year, the organisers are urging devotees to stay at home. The state government has strictly instructed the Puja Committees to celebrate the Puja in low-key manner sans devotees following Covid protocol barring them from erecting lavishing gates and pandals following which Ganesh Puja celebration lacks lustre in the state.
