Gajapati appeals to religious bodies not to celebrate Rath Yatra on different date

Puri: Gajapati Maharaj Dibyasingha Deb today appealed to all the devotees and religious institutions across the globe to observe Rath Yatra on schedule, fixed for the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri, the abode of the Lord Jagannath.

The Gajapati’s appeal came a day after the Ludhiana branch of ISKCON decided to hold Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath on a different date sparked massive resentment in Odisha.

The Gajapati, who is the chairman of the Shree Jagannath Temple Managing Committee and also considered as the first servitor of the Lord Jagannath, said, “The Ratha Yatra of Lord Jagannath is celebrated on the second day of ‘Sukla Pakshya’ in the Hindu month of ‘Ashadha’ every year in Puri. The deities return to the Ratna Singhasan on the 13th/14th day of the month,” said the Gajapati Maharaj in a press communiqué.

“I appeal to all the devotees and religious institutions not to deviate from the centuries-old tradition and culture by celebrating the chariot festival on any other day,” added Deb.
