Five arrested for smuggling elephant tusks

Baripada: Five persons have been arrested on the charges of smuggling two elephant tusks near Titia Chhak here, said an official of Baripada Forest Division on Friday.

The arrestees were identified as Debendranath Mahali, Jagannath Sigh, Pankaj Kumar Mahali, Binu Singh of Uparataladiha village and Sushant Singh of Jamudiha village under the Udala police station.

As per the forest department, one tusk is of 45-cm long and weighs 700 grams while the other one is 38-cm long and weighs 600 grams.

The tusks were removed from an 8-9 years-old baby tusker.

The seized tusks are estimated to be of Rs 50,000-70,000 each, the official further informed.
