Bhubaneswar: A large number of farmers under the aegis of Navanirman Krushak Sangathan (NKS) attempted to gherao Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) office here protesting the injustice meted out to them by the Central and State Governments.
A scuffle also ensued between police personnel and farmers when the latter tried to barge into the CEO office. The protestors hit the streets under the leadership of NKS convenor Akshaya Kumar. The NKS has been demanding price, prestige, pension for farmers.
Last month, the farmers’ outfit had met CEO Surendra Kumar and decided to boycott the ensuing election and not to allow EVMs into villages protesting State and Centre’s indifferent attitude in addressing farmer issues in Odisha.
Meanwhile, security has been tightened around the CEO office to avoid any untoward incident. Four Lok Sabha and 28 Assembly seats will to go polls on Thursday in the first phase.
