Bhubaneswar: Former Union Minister Jitendra Singh was appointed as the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) in-charge. He replaced BK Hariprasad.
“The Congress president Rahul Gandhi has appointed Jitendra Singh, Ex-Union Minister as the AICC in-charge of Odisha in place of BK Hariprasad,” said a statement issued by AICC general secretary Janardan Dwivedi.
Along with Odisha, Rahul Gandhi also replaced the party in-charge of Gujarat. MP Rajeev Satav was appointed as in-charge of party affairs of Gujarat.
Hariprasad had been facing revolt from several MLAs within the party in Odisha for the past few years. The first sign of dissent surfaced in November 2016 at a city hotel where he was busy with party’s State president Prasad Harichandan in meeting.
A group of student Congress leaders stormed into the hotel and booed Hariprasad. The protesters demanded Hariprasad’s ouster from party affairs in Odisha. He continued to feel the heat as several MLAs, including the legislature party’s chief whip Tara Prasad Bahinipati squarely blamed Hariprasad for his inept handling of party affairs in the Odisha.
The ouster demand intensified following party’s dismal performance in last year’s panchayat election and the Bijepur Assembly by-election.
