Bhubaneswar: Former Finance Minister Panchanan Kanungo and former Rajasthan Chief Secretary Jagdish Mohanty will join Congress during party’s Parivartan Sankalpa Samabesha at Tamando in the presence of AICC president Rahul Gandhi.
Kanungo resigned from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in 2008.
The joining of the senior leader and former bureaucrat is crucial for the party in the State where several senior leaders, including two MLAs – Naba Kishore Das and Jogesh Singh – quit the party recently.
Rahul is on a day-long visit to the State today. During the visit, he will address a rally, christened as ‘Parivartan Sankalp Samavesh’ at Tamando Stadium on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. He will also meet intellectuals during his day-long visit here.
Rahul’s visit comes close on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s three back-to-back visits to the State in last one month. It was Rahul’s first visit to Odisha as party president. Before this, Rahul had a two-day visit of the State more than three years ago, in September 2015, when he was party’s vice-president. He will also meet employees of the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).
