Bhubaneswar: Former Assam High Court Chief Justice Ajit Singh has been appointed as the first Lokayukta of Odisha.
Governor Prof Ganeshi Lal approved his name, sent by the State government earlier. A seven-member search committee had unanimously finalised his name at a meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on February 12. The Supreme Court had earlier asked the State Government to complete the whole processes of appointment of the Lokayukta by March 31.
The office of the Lokayukta, which will work as an anti-corruption watchdog, will start functioning from April 8, 2019. .
Notably, Odisha was the first State in the country in passing the Lokayukta Bill in the State Assembly on February 14, 2014. However, the Lokayukta was yet to be appointed. Acting on a petition, the Supreme Court had on July 10, 2018, directed the Government to complete the process for appointment of the Lokayukta by October 10. However, on subsequent requests of the State Government, the SC had extended the time till March 31.
