Elephant herd wreaks havoc in Keonjhar

Telkoi, July 3: A herd of wild elephants have created havoc in Telkoi area of Keonjhar district last night by damaging several houses and crops. A herd of six elephants, including two calves, entered into Krushnapur village late at night and damaged houses. They ate and took away five sacks of rice damaging house of a villager. The family members ran helter-skelter in panic when the herd attacked the house. They also destroyed acres of paddy plantation in the village. The forest department personnel reached the spot being informed about the incident and chased away the herd into nearby jungle. It is a regular affair for the people of several villages in Telkoi area and they are living in fear and panic as forest department has failed to prevent the pachyderms from entering villages. Villagers have lost their cultivated crops and houses. The government is not responding to our woes, said the villagers.
