Bhubaneswar: Panic has gripped residents of a few villages in Keonjhar district as a herd of 18 elephants razed property and crops early this morning.
Sources said a herd of 18 elephants entered to Padmapur and Radukela area under Champua forest range early this morning and destroyed property and paddy crops.
This led to panic among the villagers who informed the Forest department to keep the elephants at bay and protect their crop as well as property.
The exact figure of damaged paddy can be confirmed after the elephant herd leave the area.
Meanwhile, forest officials managed to chase away the animals.
During their movement, no untoward incident was reported other than extensive damage to paddy crop, sources said.
