Bhubaneswar, Jan 27: Four more brown sugar traders have come under clutches of the commissionerate police. The arrested criminals included a brown sugar mafia from Jaleswar area in Balasore district and an engineering student. Even a student, who was recently released from jail on bail after his arrest on the charge of attempt to murder, was one among the arrested culprits. The most interesting fact is that these accused persons are involved in the sex racket as pimps.
They are said to have been involved in the multiple criminal activities in order to earn fast buck with lesser labour.
According to the commissionerate police, the arrested accused included brown sugar mafia Budhia Khan and an engineering student. Besides, one among them was a student, who was booked on attempt to murder charge and released from jail nine days ago.
Police and excise staff have seized over 10 gm brown sugar worth Rs 10 lakh from them. Besides, 24 gm brown sugar was sized from another accused nabbed by Sahid Nagar police.
Brown sugar smuggling is flourishing in the capital city despite the periodic seizure followed by arrests. The commissionerate police has registered 56 cases relating to brown sugar smuggling within last four months and arrested 105 persons in this connection. Around 1 kg 302 gm brown sugar worth Rs 1.5 crore was seized from these culprits.
The spread of the brown sugar smuggling not- with- standing regular arrests and seizures under Operation White Clean has posed a challenge to the police.
