Dolphin census to commence in Bhitarakanika and Gahiramatha

Kendrapara, Jan15: The annual dolphin census of Bhitarakanika Wildlife Sanctuary and Gahiramatha Marine Santuary in the district will be held on January 19, a forest official said on Wednesday.

The census of dolphins inhabiting in the brackish water bodies is going to be conducted after a five-year break, the official added.

Nine teams comprising over 40 wildlife experts will conduct the headcount exercise.

Binoculars, GPS set and rangefinders will be used to conduct the census.

The last census in 2015 had reported presence of 270 dolphins in the sea and river mouths.
