Kendrapara/Berhampur, Jan19: The annual dolphin census of Bhitarakanika Wildlife Sanctuary, Gahiramatha Marine Santuary in Kendrapara district and Chilika Lake in Ganjam district began on Sunday. The census of dolphins inhabiting in the brackish water bodies is being conducted after a five-year break, an official said. The head count began in Chilika lake around 6 am. A total of 18 teams – comprising 75 members – are engaged in the exercise which will continue till 12 pm. Line track survey (LTS), GPS tracking and binoculars are being used for the census. Nine teams comprising over 40 wildlife experts started the headcount exercise in Rajnagar, Rajkanika, Mahakalapada, Gahiramatha and Bhitarakanika National park in Kendrapara district. The last census was conducted in 2015.
