Kendrapara: The death toll in Wednesday’s boat capsize mishap rose to 10 as ODRAF team recovered body of missing six-year-old girl from Mahanadi river near Nipania in Kendrapara district.
The rescue team recovered the body three km away from the accident site.
On Thursday, pall of gloom descended on Hasina village in Kendrapara district where last rites of nine persons killed in the boat accident were performed.
Heart-rending scenes were witnessed, as the mortal remains of the nine accident victims were cremated en masse at the village crematorium on Thursday evening.
The tragic incident occurred when a boat carrying over 50 people of 17 families-hailing from Kujang area in Jagatsinghpur district– was returning after a picnic at the Light House at Hukitola on the occasion of New Year.
The boat lost control due to over loading and capsized in the Mahanadi river mouth near Nipania in Kedrapara district.
The boat was carrying around 50 people even though it had capacity of 10 passengers. The overloading is suspected to be reason behind the mishap.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh for the kin of each died and free treatment for the injured.
