Bhubaneswar, July 15: The plasma therapy will begin in the State from today.

The decision to begin the treatment was taken during a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday.

The treatment will begin in SUM Hospital and KIMS in Bhubaneswar along with Ashwini Hospital in Cuttack. The SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack has been designated as the nodal centre of plasma therapy.

Plasma therapy is an experimental procedure where plasma from the blood of a recovered Covid-19 patient is transfused to a critically ill coronavirus patient. The blood of a person who has recovered from Covid-19 develops antibodies. When injected into the blood of another patient, these antibodies are supposed to help that person fight the infection.

Earlier the state government has decided to set up plasma banks at four medical institutions of the state. The institutes are SCB Medical College and Ashwini Hospital in Cuttack and SUM and KIIMS Hospital in Bhubaneswar.
