Court allows Konark cops to take Abhijit on remand

Bhubaneswar: The Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) court today gave permission to Konark Police to take Abhijit Iyer-Mitra on a four-day remand for interrogation.

He was arrested yesterday by Commissionerate Police for making derogatory remarks against Odisha and its cultures and temples.

He was arrested by the Saheed Nagar police in connection with the case filed against him over his derogatory remarks against Odisha and Konark Sun temple.

Following his arrest, he was produced before the judicial magistrate of Bhubaneswar and his bail plea was rejected. He was sent to 14-day judicial custody.

Earlier in the day on Tuesday, Mitra was taken into custody by police after he appeared before the House Committee of the Odisha Legislative Assembly. Mitra is facing the allegation of making derogatory remarks against Odisha MLAs. He was asked to appear before the House panel again on November 2.

During a visit to the Konark Sun Temple on September 16, Iyer-Mitra had posted a satirical video on Twitter, where he made derogatory remarks by posting a satirical video on Twitter insulting Odisha, its culture, temple tradition and the lawmakers.

And two FIRs were filed against him at Konark police station in Puri and Saheed Nagar police station here.

He was arrested by Odisha Police on September 20 from Delhi on charges of hurting religious sentiments. A Delhi court later granted him bail against a bond of one lakh and directed him to join the investigation at Konark police station. And he was recently denied bail by the Supreme Court.
