Nuapada, Jan 23: Police have seized 8000 bottles of cough syrup worth Rs 10 lakh near Komana in the district this morning. Police have also arrested four persons including the driver of a transport vehicle in this connection.
Acting on reliable information, police intercepted the transport vehicle and seized the cough syrup bottles. Police said that the consignment of the cough syrup was being transported from neighbouring Chhattisgarh.
Doctors said that the cough syrup is used for medicinal purpose for treatment of cold, cough and bronchitis with a prescribed dose of 5-10 ml as per the direction of the physician. “The syrup contains Codeine phosphate, a derivative of morphine and addicts use the syrup to get high. The addicts are using the syrup as a cheap option for intoxication. Though it should be given with valid prescription, medicine shop owners are selling the syrup to get profit,” said a doctor,
