Rourkela, July : A special award programme under Instant Recognition Scheme was organised at Oxygen Plant of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant on 1st July.

Atish Chandra Sarkar, CGM (Utilities & Environment) was the Chief Guest on the occasion and presented the award to 2 contract labours of Messers Nataraj Brothers. Present on the occasion were Mr. B Mallik, GM Incharge (Oxygen Plant), Mr. Avinash, Deputy Manager (Personnel – CLC), other officers, employees of the Department and the concerned contractor. The programme was coordinated by Ms. Asha Kartha, GM (Oxygen Plant). The event was organised adhering to norms pertaining to COVID 19 directives

It may be noted that with the commissioning of 700 IPD Oxygem Plant (ASU-III) in Unit – 2 Oxygen Plant, 4 ASUs in Unit – 1 (TOP- I) were stopped. Subsequently the 4 ASUs were written off and disposed. However, one damaged PNC booster column was not disposed. The column could be reused in Steel Melting Shop – II and Foundary if cut into sizeable pieces. However cutting of the column with a height of 2.5 metres, diameter of 1.5 metres and weight of about 2.5 ton to small pieces of about 600mm x 800mm was not an easy task.

COVID-19 also added to the challenge as service providers with Plasma cutting machine were unavailable. Under such circumstances the two contract labour using an alternate method, took up the challenge and were able to cut the column using welding electrode into required sizes in the record time of 2 days. Further the damaged copper tubes from heat exchanger tube bundles were also cut.
