Bhubaneswar, Oct 22: The Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare department has asked all the Collectors to keep a vigil on the price of onions. Though price of onion was Rs 50 per kilogram a week ago, the price has skyrocketed to Rs 80 per kilogram in last few days. The department has written to all Collectors to keep a close watch on the watch on the price and availability of onion in the market. Besides the depsrtment has also asked the Collectors to utlise utilize the services at the field functionaries to frequently inspect both the wholesale and retail business premises on regular basis and ensure its availability at reasonable pace to the needy consumers. “Rising trend of prices of onion is a concern which affects the common man. This is due to the loss of crop in the procuring states as our state is depending on import of onion from these States. Although it is a national phenomenon, the unscrupulous traders may resort to high profiteering and sell onion at an exorbitant price,” read the letter.
