Balasore: The much-awaited Fakir Mohan Medical College and Hospital was inaugurated in Balasore town on Tuesday.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik dedicated the medical college and hospital to the people in the presence of Union Minister of State for Health Ashwini Kumar Choubey.
A total of 99 students have already taken admission in Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) course for the first 2018-19 academic session.
On August 28, the State Government named the medical college at Balasore after eminent litterateur Fakir Mohan Senapati along with medical college at Bolangir after saint and poet Bhima Bhoi.
Fakir Mohan, also known as Byasa Kabi (supreme poet) was born on January 13, 1843 at Mallikashpur in Balasore. He is also regarded as father of Odia novel and short stories, including Chha Mana Antha Gunthu.
The Bhim Bhoi Medical College and Hospital was inaugurated recently. Admissions for 100 MBBS seats in both the medical colleges started from 2018-19 academic year.
The Chief Minister earlier named medical college at Koraput after eminent freedom fighter Saheed Laxman Naik while the medical college at Baripada is named after famous Santhali poet Pandit Raghunath Murmu.
