Centre urged to accord Odissi music classical status

Bhubaneswar, Sep 2: The Odisha government today approved a proposal to request the centre to accord classical status to Odissi music. Briefing the media, Culture Minister Jyoti Prakash Panigrahi said the Heritage Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik gave its nod to the proposal to this effect. in 1964, Odissi dance was accorded 'classical dance' status by the Centre. Later in, Odia language received the status of 6th classical language of the country by the Union government. In 2008, Odissi music was accorded classical status by the state government. The Heritage Cabinet today requested the Union government to declare it as one of the classical music of the country, said the Culture Minister, who was present in the virtual meeting of the Heritage Cabinet.
