Bhubaneswar: The Central Zoo Authority questioned the State Government’s plan to shift tigress Sundari to Nandankanan Zoo.
In a letter to Odisha PCCF (Wildlife), the Central Zoo Authority said it is unlawful for zoo to collect animals from wild except for obtaining founder animals for approved breeding programme and infusion new blood into inbred groups.
Odisha Forest Minister Bijayshree Routray had earlier informed that the tigress which has spread panic in Satkosia will be taken to Nandankanan zoo or it could be sent back to its original habitat Bandhavgarh in MP, if NTCA doesn’t agree for shifting to zoo.
‘Sundari’ which was brought from Madhya Pradesh and relocated into the Satkosia forest under inter-state tiger translocation programme, was accused of killing two persons and a bullock in human settlement of Satkosia area. The incident sparked an outrage in the district with locals torching forest offices and blocking national highway with a demand to shift the tigress.
She was tranquilised on Tuesday and now kept at Raiguda and released into the enclosure in Angul district.
