Breach of privilege: Abhijit appears before House panel, fails to submit affidavit 

Bhubaneswar: Abhijit Iyer-Mitra, who is now in judicial custody on the charges of expressing derogatory remarks against Odisha, its culture and places of worships, appeared before the House Committee for his alleged derogatory remarks against the Assembly and its members today.

However, he failed to file affidavit today. He was directed by the Committee to submit affidavit tomorrow.

On October 23, Abhijit appeared before the committee and was directed to submit an affidavit before it on November 2 even after he apologised before the panel for his alleged derogatory remarks.

Abhijit is now lodged at the Nimapara jail.

The Delhi-based columnist Abhijit faces trial under various sections of IPC, including 153A (promoting enmity between different groups) and 295A (Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings or any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs).

Earlier, he was in Jharpada jail following his arrest on October 23 for his alleged derogatory tweets on Odisha, Jagannath and rasagola on the basis of a complaint filed in Saheednagar police station here. The court in Bhubaneswar had rejected his bail and sent him in judicial custody for 14 days.

Later he was taken by Knoark police and lodged at the Nimapara jail.
