Kendrapara: BJP leaders and workers today staged demonstration in front of the Kendrapara Collectorate demanding immediate conduct of elections to the Patkura Assembly constituency.

The protestors led party Kendrapara district unit president Duryodhan Sahu staged the dharna decrying the alleged conspiracy to postpone the election and urged the Collector to recommend the CEO for an early election.

The Election Commission of India has postponed election to the Patkura assembly constituency in view of the devastation caused to the coastal districts by cyclone Fani on May 3. Election to the constituency was scheduled on May 19.

Notably, the ECI had extended the completion of the elections from Patkura assembly constituency for 60 days.

Earlier on April 30, BJD president and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had urged the ECI to postpone the elections in the Assembly segment in the wake of cyclone alert.

However, the BJP delegation led by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had moved the ECI opposing the CM’s proposal.

Though the four-phase simultaneous election was ended on April 29, polling to Patkura Assembly poll, scheduled for April 19, was adjourned following death of BJD candidate Bed Prakash Agarwalla. Later, the ECI scheduled it on May 19.

BJP has fielded Bijoy Mohapatra from Patkura.
