Bhubaneswar: Hundreds of activists belonging to the Biju Yuva Janata Dal and the Biju Chhatra Janata Dal have staged a dharna in front of the East Coast Railway (ECoR) head office here in protest against the Union Government’s decision to bifurcate Waltair division from the ECoR to form a new zone named South Coast Railway.

“It is a discrimination against Odisha by the Narendra Modi Government again. While the Centre has been taking highest amount of revenue from the ECoR, the decision to weaken it (the ECoR) is a conspiracy made against the State,” alleged BJD general secretary and MLA Sanjay Kumar Dasburma.

Notably, Railways Minister Piyush Goyal had on Wednesday announced a new railway division named South Coast Railway with its headquarters at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The new zone would comprise the existing Guntakal, Guntur and Vijayawada divisions. It would also include around half of the Waltair Division of the ECoR. The rest of the Waltair Division would become a separate division with its headquarters at Rayagada which would remain under the ECoR.
