Bhubaneswar: The Berhampur University, Bhanja Vihar, Berhampur was declared sine die as student unrest continued for hours in the university campus, according to reports.
University authorities have asked students to leave hostels and campus by Saturday 10 am and handed over the secirity charges to the police.
According to reports, tension started erupting soon after publication of final list of candidates yesterday. Some students alleged that general secretary candidate Ajay Swain was not valid as a criminal case eas against him. After re-scrutiny, his name was deleted from the final list. This triggered resentment among Ajay’s supporters, who went on a rampage in the campus. Though ASP and the Sub-Collector visited the campus, no development was marked. Then, university authorities declared cancellation of students’ union polls in the campus. But, another group of students opposed this saying why they (students) would be deprived of election rights foe fault of a single candidate. In protest, the sat on a dharna in front of the Vice-Chancellor’ s office through the night.
With no option left for maintaining law and order in the campus, university authorities declared the campus sine die early this morning.
