Khurdha: Begunia police station in Khurdha district today turned into a virtual battle ground after hundreds of locals went berserk and stormed into the police station, ransacking furniture, computers, tearing files and attacking officials on duty.
They vented their anger after police allegedly remained mute and shielding Begunia MLA Prashant Jagdev, who frequently threatened a former sarpanch named Naba Kishre Swain.
The MLA had threatened Swain eight days back over a construction work following which Swain lodged a complaint with police in this regard. However, even after a week, police didn’t initiate any action against him, irate mob alleged, adding that police are shielding him as he is the legislator of the ruling party.
Assistant sub-inspector of police Mahendra Sethy was injured in mob’s attack. The angry people also staged a road blockade on Khurdha-Bolangir NH 57, disrupting vehicular traffic.
The protesters warned to intensify the agitation until the MLA is arrested.
