Kolkata, April 8: After failing to get a favourable order, a lawyer cursed a Calcutta High Court judge to be infected with coronavirus. Annoyed with such behaviour in the court room Justice Dipankar Datta admonished the lawyer, Bijoy Adhikary, for failing to uphold the dignity of the court and acting in a manner " not behoving a member of the noble profession" and ordered him to reply to the contempt rule within a fortnight from the date on which it is served upon him. Justice Datta has directed hearing of the matter by an appropriate division bench having the jurisdiction to hear criminal contempt matters once the court reopens after summer vacation. Due to COVID-19 pandemic the Calcutta High Court has been hearing only very urgent matters since March 15 and hearing through video conferencing from March 25. However, Adhikary had moved the court of Justice Datta seeking a stay on the auction of a bus of his client by a nationalized bank for default in loan repayment claiming the case was urgent. But the court refused to grant an urgent hearing as the bus was seized by the bank on January 15. Irate over the justice's decision, the lawyer cursed him to be infected with coronavirus.
