Padmapur, Jan 23: Farmers’ protest in Bargarh district entered the second day today. Hundreds of farmers spent their night at Lakhamara square on Padmapur-Baisana main road in open despite cold and dense fog in protest against delay in paddy procurement. The farmers yesterday staged a protest for the second time this week after the district administration fail to fulfil their demand. The farmers had taken to the streets last Monday to press the same demand and later withdrew it as the district administration assured to provide token. However, they were not issued token needed for procurement of their paddy. Hundred of farmers on Wednesday blocked the road putting around 5000 gunny bags containing the paddy produce. Hundreds of vehicles were found stranded for hours on the busy Padmapur-Baisana main road following the protest yesterday. Around 308 farmers of Lakhamara society have not got token, which is mandatory to sell their paddy in the state-operated market yard. Notably, Odisha government has introduced a centralised token system for the paddy procurement. However, the farmers are opposing the centralised token system as they are unable to get it at the proper time to sell their paddy.
