Bhubaneswar: Abhijit Iyer Mitra, who recently created a stir by making derogatory remarks against Lord Jagannath, Konark Sun Temple and Odisha MLAs, was arrested in New Delhi today, sources said.
As per initial reports, he was arrested by Nizamuddin Police. He will be produced in Saket Court at there.
Even, the Odisha Assembly today constituted a House Committee headed by Leader of Opposition (LoP) Narasingha Mishra to conduct a detailed inquiry into derogatory remarks made by Mitra against the Odisha MLAs.
The six-member Committee will submit its report suggesting action against the non-Odia person on the first day of the next session of the Assembly.
Speaker Pradip Kumar Amat formed the committee after the MLAs cutting across the party lines condemned Mitra’s derogatory remarks against Odisha, Odia culture and Lord Jagannath and Odisha lawmakers. They urged the Speaker to issue a warrant against Mitra.
Notably, on November 26, 2017, Mitra had tweeted that “Odisha was discovered by Bengali explorers, who called it “OriShala!!! And it was named Orissa.” He also said that there’s “no such thing as Orissa, just the wild southern provinces of undivided Bengal.”
However, the matter came to light recently. Meanwhile, leaders cutting across party lines condemned these alleged derogatory remarks on Odisha and Odias.
But, the matter worsened when he termed the MLAs of the State as “fools” for opposing him.
