Bhubaneswar: Abhijit Iyer-Mitra appeared before the six-member Assembly committee today over his alleged derogatory remarks against Odisha, its places of worship and the lawmakers.

The six-member committee headed by Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra on October 11 directed Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) Dr RP Sharma to produce Iyer-Mitra before it on October 23 over his alleged derogatory remarks against Odisha, its places of worship and the lawmakers, despite he apologised for his ‘unpardonable offence’.

He failed to appear before the House Committee despite being summoned by the House panel.  However, he had tendered apology for his remarks through e-mail.

On September 28 the House Committee issued a notice to Abhijit to appear in person before it on October 11. He was urged to remain present at 11 am on October 11 in room number 54 of the Odisha Assembly for deposition.

He had come to Odisha on September 15. After touring Puri, Konark and Chilika, he allegedly posted derogatory remarks on social media insulting the State, its culture and tradition and the lawmakers.

He was arrested by Odisha police, with help of Delhi police, on September 20 on the charge of outraging religious sentiments of the people. A Delhi court later granted him bail on a bond of Rs 1 lakh and directed him to join the investigation at Konark police station by September 28.

Recently, the Supreme Court denied him bail.
