18,683 died in road mishaps in last 4 years in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: As many as 18,683 people have been killed in the State due to road mishaps in last four years, Commerce and Transport Minister Padmanabha Behera informed the Assembly today.

“There were 10,531 accidents and 4,463 deaths in 2016 and 10,855 accidents and 4,790 deaths in 2017,” said the Minister in response to a query of BJD MLA Prashant Behera.

As many as 8,203 accidents occurred and 4,115 persons died in road accidents across the State during the current year by September as compared to 11,262 accidents and 5,315 deaths in the preceding year. If this year’s figure is analysed, as many as 457.2 persons died each month, which would make 5486.66 deaths in 12 months, said the Minister.

The Minister said several preventive measures are being taken by the Government to check the road mishaps and casualty.
