Bhubaneswar: The Talcher police lifted away 11 persons who were leading agitation in the coal town, demanding sand filling in mining hollows and steps for safety of locals, yesterday.
Notably, locals, irrespective of their party affiliations, resorted to a bandh soon after a verandah of a house subsided to a 3-ft deep. It happened due to the underground vacuum caused by coal mining and non-filling of hollows.
The agitation continued to hit normal life this morning too. Schools, colleges, shops and bazaars remained closed. Similarly, vehicular movement has been disrupted as people have blocked roads.
Locals have demanded that the MCL be asked to fill sand in the vacuums immediately and the administration take all steps for their safety.
